Reading for the Keen

Spiritual Formation Reading – Over the last couple of weeks I have been speaking about the priority of spiritual formation in our lives as disciples of Christ. For those who would like to read more on the topic I have listed some books below that you will find helpful. Just click on the links to find out more.

Celebration of Discipline by Richard Foster – This is a Christian classic, is short and a pretty easy read. In it Foster gives a sketch framework for understanding how we become like Christ, but also gives a very practical explanation of a range of disciplines. Its a good intro to the subject.

Spirit of The Disciplines by Dallas Willard – This is a more comprehensive description of how the various practices give form to our Christian character. I have read this one a few times now and while its not an easy read its got some real gems within.

The Life You’ve Always Wanted by John Ortberg – Ortberg calls this book ‘Dallas Willard for Dummies’ and it does read a bit like that. If Willard is a ‘dense’ read, Ortberg is engaging and inspiring and probably the easiest of the three to digest. You won’t get the same depth as Willard, but you’ll get the point clearly and succintly.

Measuring Spiritual Growth – and finally an interview with Dallas Willard that looks at what we measure in our churches and why. Its a provocative read and sure to get you thinking
